MusicWorks has had a busy year during 2018…not only with our onsite work but also with concerts, campaigns and workshops! These activities provided our young people with the opportunity to perform, to be witnessed and show off their talents! We were also the happy beneficiaries of a campaign run by Fine Music Radio and Voices from the Heart choir in America. ZONNEBLOEM FESTIVAL, MAY 2018
The Inaugural Zonnebloem Festival, which celebrated 160 years of the Zonnebloem College Estate that houses the Zonnebloem Boys and Girls Schools was held in May this year. Young people who are part of the MusicWorks’ Music for Life programme at the schools opened the festival in front of residents, learners, members of the communities and alumni. It was a fantastic opportunity for our beneficiaries to showcase their newly acquired marimba skills and the entire event highlighted the long history of Zonnebloem community and we were so honoured to be part of it!
SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL, ARTSCAPE THEATRE CENTRE. JULY 2018
MusicWorks’ Heideveld and Lavender Hill schools were invited to take part at the Schools Music Festival at the Artscape Theatre Centre during July 2018. Four groups participated and were then invited to perform at the opening of the Gala Event in the Artscape foyer at which they were awarded a trophy. This opportunity provided our learners with the chance to perform on a professional stage in front of their peers.
CAPE TOWN MARIMBA FESTIVAL AT THE BAXTER THEATRE
The annual Cape Town Marimba Festival took place at the Baxter Theatre in April 2018.
Two of MusicWorks’ Heideveld based marimba groups were invited to take part and surprised the crowd by also performing on steel pans!
This experience provided our young people with the opportunity to perform alongside the peers from schools across the peninsula as well as perform with seasoned professionals in a mass marimba event.
FINE MUSIC RADIO 101.3 FM AND MUSICWORKS
To celebrate FMRs 23rdBirthday, Fine Music Radio selected MusicWorks as their charity of choice raising an astonishing R78 451 for MusicWorks’ music interventions with children and young people. The FMR listeners were passionate and generous and what a gift this was! Campaigns such as this are a real gift for any NGO and we are so grateful that out of all the music focussed organisations in Cape Town, they chose us!
VOICES FROM THE HEART
Two years ago, MusicWorks was contacted by an American choir, Voices from the Heart. Based in New Hampshire, this 200-strong all woman chorus journey every second year across the globe and support local music-based NGOs during their journey. When they selected MusicWorks as their South African charity, we had no idea that this group of women from the other side of the world would impact on us so generously. At the end of July 2018, after 18-months of planning, the choir, Music Works and our Music for Life beneficiaries came together for an incredible musical exchange – an experience none of us will ever forget.
